Proposal on Saving Food and Rejecting Waste

Diligence and thrift are a kind of virtue and wisdom. Resources, be it porridge or rice, are hard to come by and should be cherished at all times. As material conditions have advanced, hunger seems to have become a thing of the past. However, at least 820 million people of the 7.633 billion people in the worldare still suffering from hunger, representing 1 in 9 people on the planet. China has achieved good food production year after year, but the impacts of COVID-19 epidemic have sent an alarming note. Global climate change and extreme weather has an negative impact on global food production, so it is still necessary to have a sense of crisis for food security. For this reason, it is extremely important to raise people’s awareness of food conservation.

As President Xi Jinping has repeatedly emphasized during the COVID-19, it is of paramount importance to stabilize agriculture and ensure the securityof food and important non-staple foods in times of risks and challenges. This calls for us as medical students to shoulder more responsibilities and develop a deeper awareness of saving. We should always save food in our daily life. Even a bowl of porridge can make a real difference. But moreover, we should also raise the awareness of food saving across the society. During his visit to Jilin province, President Xi came to the fertile black field as his first stop to inspect food production, a land that was expected to provide food for countless people. This again evidenced to the importance of food security, and therefore, food saving.So why not join us in cultivating the habit of saving and translating the thought of food protection into real actions?

This year marks the conclusion of the goal of building a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way and rooting out poverty, and we have launched an“Empty Your Plates” campaign calling for all teachers and students to end food waste by taking concrete actions. Let us stay committed to food saving even in times of security, and always say no to food waste. Let us constantly remind each other the importance of saving and set a good example for the society!
